I’m bringing these drafts into class tomorrow for my redesign of Project Porchlight’s logo. I think these have potential, I’m interested in developing a “PP” icon out of the intertwined CFL tubes.

Sometimes when I’m tired of my monitor’s desktop I whip up a corny motivational poster to replace it. This time the advice comes from Design Observer and 37 Signals. I’m at a pivitol time here in SF, and I need to make the most of it. I’m shaking things up a bit. I recently accepted [...]
I’m applying for a job as an Icon Designer. As I have no actual experience in icon design, I was given a trial assignment to recreate and develop some new concepts. Scaling things from 128px down to 16px is definitely a worthy experiment. I scaled everything up in this preview, because although the bottom row [...]

This is the first draft for the homepage of what will eventually be a 12-15 page site. The main graphic is a placeholder for a short Flash intro movie that I’m wrapping up soon. A tentative final draft of the movie should be done by midweek. The main critique I’ve gotten so far from my [...]

This was the midterm assignment for my Concept and Design class. My goal was to design a movie poster for the documentary “I See the Earth” which debuted at Yuri’s Night last year in the Bay Area. I didn’t get to actually watch the whole film (it’s not been released) but I watched snippets on [...]

I’m redesigning Project Porchlight’s website for my Interactive Design class. This is a preliminary mood board/flowchart. It’s an amazing non-profit, and although they don’t need a redesign, I support their mission so strongly I figure that if anyone picks up on it by stumbling upon my little blog then its worth it. I’m feeling some [...]

If you’re following the blog via RSS, now is the time to click andrewwitherspoon.com to see what you’re missing out on. After a feverish few days and one big setback, I’m proud to present the new site. Thanks to the guys over at Graph Paper Press I was able to quickly and drastically improve the [...]

Objective: Demonstrate the utility of a paper clip (the subject) to market it on behalf of the manufacturing company.
Copy: “Facenate” (note: this spelling is intentional and must appear on each concept)

I wanted to give my brother Adam (a recent high school graduate) a hand when he decided to apply for his first job at LSI. It gave me a chance to try out a tutorial from Veerle. For what its worth, he got the job!

After finishing this, I think I can finally stop seeing snowflakes when I close my eyes. At least until next November. Designers everywhere must be killing themselves with the overflow of “holiday” advertising floating around these days.

Full-page color advert for the Pio. I’m genuinely excited that our student government is giving away some serious cash to deserving student projects.

Whitman sends out a president’s card to other schools every holiday season, and I got to design it this year. The photos are by various student photographers over the past couple years. The president’s office actually chose a different version I did, but I like this one a lot better, so its the one going [...]

Quick turnaround, needed the poster to be up by the next day. Got the client go ahead after a shotgun-mockup. Exciting to work under the gun, but the end result is always mildly underwhelming.
On a separate note, I’m really enjoying working on a personal piece, I hope to have it printed by the end of [...]

Alex Witherspoon, aside from being my brother, is a computer science major at Portland State University, a fledging photographer and video podcaster, and the first person I go to when my computer is on the fritz. He’s had many web presences over the past decade, his most recent being a WordPress iteration with the intent [...]

Rolled this one out today. I’m starting to get repetitive with these projects, I hope a trip to Portland for the next four days will give me a chance to get some new inspiration.

It’s been fun to work under tight deadlines for the communication department, but sometimes I wish I could spend a week on a project. I really could have done something with this if I had seven days as opposed to one hour. Of course, that’s my selfish perspective wanting to use these projects as learning [...]

We needed a poster for a Pioneer event, and given twenty minutes I banged out something decent. More important than the poster, we’re bringing in a pretty awesome guy for staff workshops and a community lecture next week. I’m pumped!

A quick job that incorporated some new vector art with some old (the bottle, way old).

A piece I did for my bedroom. Just something to look at everyday. I’ll post pictures of it once its printed.

The Pio newsroom computers needed a new look to go with this semester’s message of “change” so I cribbed from the best.
